Expressive Arts Therapy

Expressive arts therapy is a caring and supportive approach where you can use creative activities like drawing, painting, music, or writing to express your feelings and thoughts. This type of therapy allows you to communicate emotions and experiences that might be difficult to put into words. By creating art, you can gain new insights and understandings about yourself, your relationships, and your life experiences in a safe and externalized way.

This therapy is not about creating a perfect piece of art but about using the creative process as a way to heal and grow. It can help reduce stress, improve self-awareness, and promote emotional well-being. The focus is on your personal journey and using creativity as a pathway to balance and healing.

How does art in therapy work?

Memories are not just words; they are felt as sensations and images. Art therapy helps turn these images into clear, conscious thoughts, which is important for healing. Creating art can hold and release the mixed feelings you might have about recovery. Art lets you express and understand conflicting emotions in a unique way. Art therapy helps reconnect your body and mind. It's a whole experience that encourages you to be present in your body, even when you feel stressed. Some ways art might be integrated in therapy is through:

  • Drawing out how a problem feels or looks like creating a visual metaphor

  • Painting a landscape of emotions

  • Creating masks representing different parts of yourself

  • Creating a memory box to honor a lost loved one

How does music in therapy work?

Music is used in therapy to help people express their feelings and emotions through music or lyrics. Therapists might use music to help clients relax, reduce anxiety, or manage stress. Music provides a non-verbal way to express and release intense emotions such as fear, anger, or sadness. It can assist in emotional regulation and it can provide a sense of safety. Music in therapy can also foster resilience by promoting feelings of strength, empowerment, and hope. Some of the ways music can be applied is through:

  • Listening to songs with lyrics that convey a message you need or connect with

  • Songwriting for emotional expression

  • Connecting soundscapes with meditation or visualization exercises

  • Rhythmic drumming for managing anxiety

How does writing in therapy work?

Writing in therapy, often called expressive writing, helps you explore and understand your thoughts and feelings. By writing about your experiences, you can make sense of them and express emotions that might be hard to talk about. Some of the ways writing  can be applied is through:

  • Journaling thoughts and feelings

  • Expressive writing using metaphors or poetry to express emotions

  • Writing a letter of forgiveness to yourself or others

  • Rewriting your life's story to highlight your strengths or gain a new perspective

  • Gratitude lists

There are many other ways that expressive arts therapy can be used. Your counselor will always ask what you might feel comfortable doing and will collaborate with you in determining the right time to use these modalities. You can also ask for more knowledge on expressive arts therapy from your therapist to determine if expressive arts therapy is the right approach for you.
